Tough Questions
Why hire you?
Why should we hire you?
Although this blockbuster question present candidate with perhaps the best opportunity to sell them and impress prospective employers, few realize what this question covers and hence utilize it ineffectively. As Marion Faux, author of The Executive Interview, points out, “The interviewer who asks you this is really probing four qualities: Your readiness for the job, your ability to handle it, your willingness to work hard at it, and your fitness for the job.”
You can demonstrate readiness by distributing how your work experience, career progression, and strongest qualities and technical achievement would make you an asset for the company. Discussing specific technical skills and accomplishments can highlight abilities. Willingness to work hard can be demonstrated by your assertiveness and commitment to whatever challenges you undertake. As for fitness for the job, you can add that you are reliable, have integrity, and can accommodate yourself to any difficulties the job entails. When answering this question, some engineers make the mistake of going great details about what they hope to gain from the job rather than how the company will benefit.
