Tough Questions
Tell me about yourself?
Could you tell me a little bit about yourself ?
Although this open-ended question appears innocuous, it intimidates many engineers. They don’t know what to say or how long they should talk, especially since the interview is just beginning. They should realize that most interviewers use this question not only for information gathering, but also for assessing the poise, style of delivery and communication ability of the job candidates.
Instead of launching into a mini-speech about childhood, schooling, hobbies, previous jobs, and personal likes and dislikes, it is best to cite recent personal and professional work experiences that relate to the position sought. The statement should support the information and credentials on the resume. Although this question gives engineers a greater selling opportunity, at this stage of the interview it is better to be concise and low-key.
